His Hand Upon Us

By Angie Bundy, OMS missionary in Haiti

A few weeks ago, we left my Mom’s house in Kentucky to head down to Florida to catch our flight back to Haiti. While driving happily along, Brett asked me, “So, how does it feel to have avoided hospitals this summer?” That had been our “joking” goal this summer― to avoid the hospital. In 2006, Brianna was in the hospital for about three weeks with serious stomach issues. Then, right after she got out, Brett fell and broke his arm and was admitted for surgery. The following summer we had Kristina, which was a good thing, but still required a hospital stay.

Just after my reply of, “Great! But, we haven’t made it yet,” we noticed a truck and trailer, hauling a nine-ton dumpster coming around a curve in front of us. We watched in horrified silence as the construction dumpster began tilting to the side as it rounded the curve, coming toward us. The pin holding the dumpster broke and hit our van just in front of the driver’s seat, destroying the side mirror. Then, it scraped and bumped along where Kristina and Alanna were sitting. Finally, it crashed into our back taillight before completely coming apart from the trailer and crashing onto the highway, blocking the entire road in its landing.

Both of the rims on the wheels on that side of the van were crushed, and our tires were flattened. But, we didn’t have a bump or scratch on us! The LORD had His hand upon us! We are walking testimonies of His protection.

When we first got back into the van after the crash, we noticed that our soda cans that were sitting in the cup holders between Brett and me were crushed by the impact. I wish that we would have thought to have taken a picture of them (as well as the accident), but we’ll never forget about those cans or God’s obvious protection upon our family.

After we got the taillight, mirror, rims and tires replaced, we were able to continue our drive to Florida. Praise the Lord! The van was noisier than usual, and we had to stop to buy duct tape to keep the bumper from flapping in the wind, but we made it to Florida on time, and then, on to Haiti safely.

Thanks for praying for our family faithfully. We praise the Lord for His watch care over us, as David praised in Psalm 118: “The Lord’s right hand has done mighty things! The Lord’s right hand is lifted high…..I will proclaim what the Lord has done!”

Please also remember to pray for Haiti. The continued rise in prices, recent hurricanes and resulting floods are making life even more difficult for the people. Pray for God’s deliverance and provision. The situation here seems more impossible than ever. But we must remember Psalm 121, “I lift up my eyes to the hills – where does my help come from? My help comes from the Lord, the Maker of heaven and earth.”
